The Meadow Garden

butterfly weed

Butterfly weed

asclepias tuberosa
  • Native
  • Perennial
  • Bloom:  Summer
  • Propagation:  Seed, Root Cuttings
Butterfly weed is a member of the milkweed family which doesn't contain milky sap. Butterfly weed comes in 3 colours, Red, yellow & orange. It's another host plant for the monarch butterfly.

Transplanting butterfly weed is difficult. The local extension service recommends against making the attempt. I've found that by flagging butterfly weed & digging it in the spring when it first emerges from the soil I can move it without difficulty.

milkweed bug

The milkweed bug may also come by. When they visit, the milkweed bug sucks sap from the developing seedpods, preventing seed formation.
